The Heart of a Servant: Melvin Jones

melvin jones 2A successful Chicago entrepreneur in the insurance industry in the early 1900’s, Melvin Jones was a strategic thinker and a member of a local professional business organization. In an effort to build an even stronger bond within the organization, he asked one question which would lead to the first Lions Club in 1917.

“What if these men, who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?”
It is with this intent that Lions Clubs International began. Then, in the early 1920’s Helen Keller challenged the Lions to “become the knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.”

melvin jones 1The Lions accepted that challenge and since then have been known for helping the visually impaired. But, Lions have done much more than that. Today, there are Lions Clubs throughout the world, providing vision screening, eyeglass re-cycling, youth camps and foreign exchanges, hearing programs, diabetes awareness programs and much, much more.

Lions Clubs International seeks to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world by promoting the principles of good government and good citizenship. We also take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of our community, and we encourage service-minded people to serve their community without regard to sex, religion, ethnicity or partisan politics and without regard to personal financial reward.
Today, Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organization. We have over 1.35 million members in more than 56,000 clubs in 206 countries and geographic areas.
